Goldspotted Oak Borer
On May 7, 2024, the Board of Supervisors adopted a motion titled “Defending LA County’s Oak Trees from the Invasive Goldspotted Oak Borer” directing the Chief Sustainability Office, in collaboration with relevant County departments and external partners, to explore various actions to mitigate the spread of GSOB. The motion also requires a report back within 180 days on recommendations for regulating firewood movement, reforestation strategies, and associated education and engagement needs.
On November 7, 2024, the CSO submitted the report back which includes recommendations for a firewood movement ordinance, reforestation strategies, and funding opportunities. The CSO also led an interdepartmental GSOB community education and engagement campaign during Fall 2024, with numerous outreach events conducted and a Community Stewards Resources Toolkit created.
