Climate Budget

To support alignment of the County’s budget with its ambitious climate goals, the County is implementing its first-ever climate budget. This work will inform budget decision-making, highlight sustainability funding opportunities and gaps, and increase transparency. A newly created role of Departmental Sustainability Budget Liaison has also been established in key County departments to support coordination and collaboration on this effort.

Initiated through a December 2023 Board motion, the Chief Sustainability Office (CSO) expanded its work with the Chief Executive Office (CEO) evaluating new sustainability-tagged budget requests against OurCounty goals with a specific focus on requests that would address climate mitigation and climate resilience. This evaluation informs CEO’s funding recommendations to the Board, and all approved new sustainability-tagged requests are reported on to the Board.

To further bolster this work, the County is developing a Municipal Climate Action Plan that will provide a comprehensive roadmap to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in County operations and identify an investment target to achieve its carbon neutrality goal. This is all part of an iterative and multi-year process to fully integrate climate budgeting into the County’s budget process.

Board Reports & Resources

Since 2024, CSO submits a report back to the Board twice during the annual budget cycle – once after Final Changes and then again after Supplemental – identifying approved sustainability-tagged budget requests and providing an update on climate budgeting implementation. Those reports can be found here.
